Surveillance, Algorithms, and Eugenics — Spring 2026

Examination of the uses of surveillance technology to monitor, categorize, and hierarchize bodies (physical traits, genetic/health data, movement, behavior) and the social, cultural, and political impacts. Study of surveillance tools and technology such as biometric recognition, health data apps, fitness trackers, and genetic biobanks. Consideration of how surveillance technology amplifies eugenics by mediating how bodies are visualized and defined by machine learning to predict “risky” or suspicious behavior. Students will be closely analyzing texts, interactive sites, media art, and data visualizations.
Visualizing the Body in Science and Technology — Spring 2025
[Disciplines: Media Theory, Medical Humanities, Digital Culture, Science and Technology Studies]
Exploration of intersections of cultural, political, and technical aspects of how body is represented and understood, especially in scientific and medical contexts. Examination of histories and theories of visualizing the body to question how practices of looking can be used to control and govern bodies. Engagement with Science and Technology Studies, Visual and Media Studies, and Critical Data Studies. Study of texts, healthcare narratives, art installations, and data visualizations. Students develop strong reading, writing, and visual analysis skills, and form critical and equitable approaches for healthcare and science..
