ABOUT ME

I am a second year Ph.D. student at UCLA in the Cinema and Media Studies program, where I also received my Master’s degree (M.A.). I have a Bachelor’s of Science (B.S.) in Biology with a focus on genomics from Loyola Marymount University.

Merging my background in Biology with Media Studies, I use Science and Technology Studies (STS), Visual Culture Studies, and Critical Data Studies to understand the co-constitution of science/digital technology and the visual. My research is cross-disciplinary, where I draw from Information Studies, Media Studies, and History of Science to examine the relationship between optical technology — such as the camera — and computer vision in data-driven decisionmaking and algorithmic governance of bodies. I am interested in how automated AI technology such as biometric surveillance uses cameras to extract data from and govern bodies to monetize information.

Works have focused on facial recognition technology, “self”-trackers and health data, and cyberfeminist media art.
